At the center of this design is the Pink Triangle, a powerful symbol of resistance and reclamation. The original upside-down pink triangle was used by Nazis to identify and stigmatize queer individuals, much like the Gold Star of David was used for Jewish people. By displaying the upright version, we connect to its transformative re-appropriation by the Silence=Death Project in 1986, which sought to raise awareness of the AIDS epidemic within the LGBTQIA+ community. This reclamation turned a symbol of persecution into one of defiance, solidarity, and action.

The design is intentionally cryptic from a distance, inviting those who pass by to pause, take a closer look, scan the QR code and read this description, encouraging reflection, education, and ultimately, action. Just as ACT UP and the Silence=Death movement used urgency to bring awareness to a critical time in history, we hope to spark that same energy in our own community.

Behind the Pink Triangle is the rainbow flower of life, a representation of the diverse and ever-growing LGBTQIA+ communities. The overlapping colors form a unified whole, symbolizing the beauty and strength we create together. The wavy lines of the Missoula Pride logo that extend to form the border represent the rivers that converge in Missoula, reflecting how our individual journeys, like the rivers, flow together in this vibrant city of unity and diversity.

The background bricks carry dual significance. First, they represent the historic brick-paved streets of Missoula, making a statement that "we have always been here, and we will continue to be here." Second, they subtly allude to the Stonewall Riots of 1969, a pivotal moment when the LGBTQIA+ community pushed back against police-led raids on queer spaces. The bricks serve as a reminder to remember our past struggles and victories, while offering a powerful message: “We choose to Celebrate, instead of Riot.” This is a tribute to the power of love, joy, and pride, affirming that our voices continue to be heard and our celebration of who we are remains unwavering.

Through these layered symbols, this design seeks to honor our history, our communities, and the ongoing fight for equality and justice. It is a call to action, a celebration of identity, and a reaffirmation that the LGBTQIA+ community will continue to thrive, resist, and grow.
